At GES, our Learning Compact and Plan includes goals for student achievement.  This section of the Paw Prints will be used to share information parents can use to support their children in achieving the goals.  We hope that this information is helpful to you!

GES Goal: To talk To Your Child About What They Read

In previous Paw Prints, we featured questions for Thinking within the Text and Thinking Beyond the Text.
The final group of questions concerns Thinking about the Text, which means analyzing and critiquing what is read.  

Here are some questions for analyzing:

• For young readers: What is an author?  What is an illustrator?
• What happened at the beginning of the story?  What happened at the end?
• Could this story really happen?  Why or why not?
• If you have the opportunity to read several books from the same author: what similarities do you notice about the books (or for older readers, the writing style)?

Here are some questions for critiquing:

• What did you like/dislike about this book’s beginning/characters/ending/pictures?
• What was the most important part of this story? Why?
• How did the writer make this book interesting or enjoyable?

As we said previously, these questions are a start for your book conversation with your child.  They are not the only valuable questions that can be discussed, and enjoy wherever your book conversation takes you!
