Note from Mr. Davis We hope your spring break was a good one. I know the students and our staff were excited to have a few days away from school. The weather cooperated and allowed everyone time to enjoy being outside. We hope you are encouraging your children to play outside after school on these beautiful afternoons. In case you missed it, we had a group of students from our Bridges Program attend the WE Day Celebration in Baltimore. This year, Paeyton Cook, current 5th grader, spoke on stage about the WE Walk For Water she participated in as part of the Green Team. She did an outstanding job representing Guilford. In addition, Mrs. Debbie Robbins, Green Team Coordinator was recognized for her efforts to support “green initiatives” and received a $500 award from Walgreen’s. Congratulations to all of our students for their hard work. Today third quarter report cards will be distributed. Please take some time to review your child’s report card and talk with them about their progress and goals in looking at the fourth quarter. I’m sure you heard, but if not, the official last day of school will be Friday, June 21st,the state Board of Education granted HCPSS a waiver for one snow day with June 19th, 20th, and 21st all being 3 hour early dismissal days. NewsPARCC Testing Information Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will participate in the PARCC Assessments over the next two weeks. English Language Arts testing will take place on April 29 – May 1 and Math testing will take place May 6 – 9. Monster Field Day Volunteers Needed Guilford Elementary School will be holding its Monster Field Day on Friday, May 10th, (rain date: Tuesday, May 14th.) We are in need of 50 volunteers to work our Field and Blacktop Stations from 9:20 a.m. - 11:00 a.m, and/or 11:00 a.m. - 12:35 p.m. We will also have our volunteer luncheon on May 10th. Please look for our green volunteer letter or sign up through our Canvas announcement or on Sign - up genius. It's Time For Spring Cleaning Your Closets If you have any unwanted clothes, textiles, and shoes, please donate them to our Cash for Clothing recycling program. Our white bin is located in the side parking lot. We accept New and Used clothing, shoes, sneakers, towels, textiles, and stuff animals. We want items in ALL conditions unwanted, outgrown, and out of style. All items must be in a plastic bag and tied shut. Look for the large white collection bin in the school parking lot. Collections will be Reworn, Repurposed or finally Recycled. Save our landfills and give your items a second life. This is a easy way for our school to raise money. Help support our school & save the environment one bag at a time! Thank you, GES Green Team Summer Programs The HCPSS GT Summer Institutes are still accepting registrations for the summer 2019 program. Spaces are available in a variety of elementary and middle school classes that provide enrichment experiences in technology, science, engineering, advanced art, and more. GES News Dear Parents Your students have been participating in WE Schools for our Bridges program. This past November we did the WE Walk For Water Campaign to ensure good weather for the event. We walked and had a relay race and read a book about the water walk in Africa .This book told of the hardship women and girls endured to gain access to clean water in their country. Our students expressed how thankful they were to have clean water in our country and they shared some stories of their families in other countries. This is our 2nd year with WE. Last year WE showcased our school at WE Day Baltimore. This year WE is having a fundraiser event for clean water to their villages they support around the world. Early Interactions Build Brains! We hope you will spread the word! Student Survey Recent state law requires that all public schools in Maryland survey students about school climate. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning. Students will take the survey during regular school hours between March 4th – April 26th. The survey will ask students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey will not ask about a student’s personal experiences, and students will not be asked to provide any information that might violate his or her privacy. The survey is confidential and school personnel will not have access to the responses of specific students. The responses your child provides will be combined with the responses from other students in the school, and results will be reported for each school and district. We are eager to receive this very important information about your student’s school and about schools across the state. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Trish Lannon. The yard sale will be promoted in our community and advertised online - considering joining other Guilford families for a fun Saturday to sell household items and clothing that you don't need anymore! Our hospitality team has several events coming up in May - please be on the lookout for opportunities to volunteer in the school in the coming weeks.
