It is extremely cold outside and our hope is that every student is dressing in layers, wearing hats and gloves as they come to school. With temperatures this cold students can experience frostbite very quickly on any exposed skin. Thank you for reminding your children to wear the proper clothing before heading out to school. We are clearly in the middle of some crazy winter weather, it’s important to continue to monitor the HCPSS website and your email for potential closings/delays. If you have questions as to if school will be open on time or closing early, you can call 410-313-6666 to get the latest information. Just a reminder, if we open two hours late, the doors open at 11:10 am, with the late bell at 11:25. Bus riders will be picked up two hours later then their usual pick up times. Congratulations to third grader, Damus Almoza who appeared on Fox 45 as the “Weather Kid” on Jan. 24th. You made us proud! Last Friday, we had our 2nd quarter Pep Rally to celebrate the hard work of all of our students. We had 353 students earn Outstanding ROAR Behavior Awards, 48 more than from the first quarter. We had 153 students with perfect attendance for 2nd Quarter and 94 of those students have had perfect attendance the entire school year. In addition to these awards a student from each classroom earned an award for Engagement, Perseverance, Collaboration, Most Improved, Student Choice, and the Golden ROAR. It was great seeing their hard work being recognized. Finally, I hope you will take a few minutes to review the PTA Fundraiser information, Raise Craze sent home from the PTA. This is a great way to encourage your child to complete acts of kindness while also raising money for the Guilford PTA which supports our students. Thank you and stay warm! Jonathan Davis Principal

From the Title I Team GES Goal: Reading aloud at home (all grades) Reading aloud to children is important, even for older children who can read independently; it helps them develop and improve literacy skills — reading, writing, speaking, and listening. And since children listen on a higher level than they read, listening to books stimulates growth and understanding of vocabulary and language patterns. It also provides a chance to snuggle with your younger child, and have quiet time with your older child. For some parents, reading aloud right before bed is easiest. After getting organized for the next day, take the time to read a short book, short story, or some pages from the chapter book you are enjoying together. If bedtime isn’t the best time for you and your child, you can start your day with five to 10 minutes of reading aloud. As you wake your children for the day ahead, give them a morning snuggle and then take a few minutes to read a short story or a few pages from If it’s hard to schedule a specific time each day to read aloud, look for openings of time in your family’s routine on any given day. Reading aloud can happen anytime - during breakfast, right dinner, or even just after dinner when everyone is gathered around Keep some books in your bag or in the car and read whenever you have to wait. Spontaneous reading can happen with little ones while you wait for older siblings in the carpool line, and with children of any age at your doctor or dentist office. You can also read aloud as you ride by listening to books on CD, even if it’s just a short trip to school or the store. The public library has lots of CDs available. We hope these ideas help you to find time in your days to read aloud with your children. Remember that whatever you can manage will be valuable, whether you can do it daily, a few days a week, or even weekly! Please complete this course before registering to volunteer at Guilford Elementary School. The course takes about 5 minutes to complete, please click on the pdf file to open Parent Volunteer.pdf and follow these 3 steps": Step One: Training Course - click through each page of the training course. Step Two: Certification of Completion - print the Parent Volunteer Certification Form and complete. Step Three: Register to Volunteer - Bring the completed and signed Certification Form to school before or on the day you volunteer. Clean Out Your Closet Challenge Guilford is participating in the Clothing to Cash Recycling Program - Help our school raise money! We accept New and Used clothing, shoes, sneakers, towels, textiles, and stuff animals. We want items in ALL conditions unwanted, outgrown, and out of style. All items must be in a plastic bag and tied shut. Look for the large white collection bin in the school parking lot. Collections will be Reworn, Repurposed or finally Recycled. Save our landfills and give your items a second life. This is a easy way for our school to raise money. Help support our school & save the environment one bag at a time!
